The West Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative (WMPSC) is part of the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network that is hosted by University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The primary aim of the West Midlands PSC is to improve the safety of patients and ensure continual patient safety learning sits at the heart of healthcare within the whole of the West Midlands. Your primary base will be the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with travel involved to stakeholder meetings/Events across the West Midlands.

WMPSC has outlined an ambitious programme to support the collaborative development of capability around Human Factors and Ergonomics for Patient Safety in our region. We are clear that ‘classroom based’ training for staff alone won’t help us develop learning and insight into practically applying HFE principles in health and help to embed those principles. We are seeking to partner with organisations in our region to test HFE principles ‘at depth’ from Board awareness, to frontline staff directly being supported to understand the human and systems design issues that can compromise patient safety.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual who is a qualified and experienced Human Factors practitioner to support our programme and work with our Associate Clinical Lead and wider WMPSC team to make a real difference to our understanding of how HFE principles can be applied in health.

The successful candidate will be focussed, resilient and able to gain the confidence of stakeholders including patients, carers, healthcare professionals and industry partners. The successful candidate, therefore, will demonstrate a track record of actively applying HFE in health, an enthusiastic and collaborative approach, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and personal credibility that generates the trust of a wide group of internal and external stakeholders

The West Midlands PSC operates in a fast-paced, dynamic and, at times, challenging environment. We are looking for someone who has a real passion for ensuring that people get the safe care they deserve. You will be able to work on your own initiative, be a self-starter but also work effectively as part of a team. We value team members who are resourceful, loyal, committed and can be an active part of our vision for continuing to drive our programmes forward.

In all we do we have a commitment to develop new insights, continually learn, share learning across stakeholders and networks and support staff to develop key patient safety skills so teams can continually improve safety. There is an opportunity for the WMPSC to play a key role using practical learning to shape the future of HFE in the UK health and social care system.

This is currently a fixed term contract until 31 March 2018, but with potential to be extended once the AHSN relicense and new contract is finalised at the end of 2017/2018.
