SwiftLocum becomes latest start-up to join Digital Health Quarter at Innovation Birmingham Campus

Birmingham’s Serendip Smart City Incubator has welcomed its latest start-up company to its Digital Health Quarter, supporting the business to produce an app which could save NHS trusts hundreds of thousands of pounds on agency costs.The SwiftLocum mobile application was created by doctors who are aware of the burden of rota gaps and locum agency costs.

Wessex AHSN has produced the "Meet Mo" video to encourage patients – who take several types of medicine – to book a review with their local pharmacist. A medicines review can help prevent trips to the GP or even hospital, and most importantly, help people feel better. A local pharmacist is a good place to have this conversation. So the benefits of a medicines review can help everyone: less pressure on GPs and hospital services, fewer medicines prescribed and, overall, patients feel better and are better able to manage their health.

Hospital trusts across the country are being urged to use an initiative to improve patient safety in emergency departments. The recommendation to implement the Emergency Department Safety Checklist comes in a letter issued this week by NHS Improvement. Designed to address the shared challenge of ensuring patient safety during periods of crowding, the checklist was developed and tested by University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, with support from the West of England AHSN through its Patient Safety Collaborative.

GP practices advised to set up official Facebook pages, according to WMAHSN-supported study

GP practices should prioritise setting up official pages on Facebook to capture patient feedback, according to a study supported by WMAHSN and published in a leading journal. The study was carried out by researchers at Keele University, including Dr Ruth Chambers, Long Term Conditions Lead for WMAHSN, and concluded that risks, which included pages set up entirely without the practices' knowledge, can be mitigated by practices having official pages hosted by the practice.
