AHSNs relicensed as key innovation arm of the NHS

NHS England has committed to the long term future of England’s Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs), as part of a 10-year vision to drive health innovation and stimulate economic growth. Today’s (24 May) NHS England Board meeting formally approved a new five year licence for the 15 AHSNs, with an option to roll this on for a further five years to 2028.

Commissioned by WMAHSN, eLearning programme Nursing SCRIPT has been rolled out across Worcester Health and Care NHS Trust with a 92% completion rate for the first module. Chief Pharmacist, John Morrison, says Nursing SCRIPT has “almost certainly” had a positive impact on patient safety.

WMAHSN supports development of  new rheumatoid arthritis treatment

West Midlands Academic Health Science Network has supported a new spinout company to develop a breakthrough in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. University of Birmingham Enterprise announced the formation of a new spinout company, Viatem Ltd to coincide with the presentation of new research showing that synthetic PEPITEM (Peptide Inhibitor of Trans-Endothelial Migration) can prevent or delay the onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in animal models of disease, and restore regulation of white blood cell migration in human tissues.

Walsall nursing home out of special measures

Walsall nursing home out of special measures

A Walsall care home rated as inadequate following a visit by the Care Quality Commission in August 2017, is now out of special measures. Ash Grange Nursing Home has seen improvements in all five of the CQC’s questions (Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led) and is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. The home is now rated as ‘good’ in both the Safe and Effective categories.

The West Midlands Genomic Medicine Centre (WMGMC) recently consented their 10,000th participant to the 100,000 Genomes Project. The pioneering project is supported by the WMAHSN who funds three Genomic Ambassador posts to drive recruitment across the region.
