Q is an initiative connecting people with improvement expertise across the UK, led by the Health Foundation and supported and co-funded by NHS Improvement and supported by AHSNs. The WMAHSN has been selected as one of the AHSNs to help recruit the next wave of Q members. We cover a large region and developing the Q community presents us with an exciting opportunity to connect people with improvement expertise and talent across the whole region, as well as nationally.

Q is an initiative connecting people who have health and care improvement expertise across the UK. It is being led by the Health Foundation and supported and co-funded by NHS Improvement. It began as an initiative to recruit ‘5,000 Safety Fellows’ following a recommendation of the 2013 Berwick report A promise to learn, a commitment to act. The report made the case for a system devoted to continual learning and improvement.

Q’s mission is to foster continuous and sustainable improvement in health and care. To achieve this, the Health Foundation is creating opportunities for people to come together and form a community - sharing ideas, enhancing skills, and collaborating to make health and care better.

Q was co-designed with 231 founding members in 2015. This helps ensure Q is genuinely helpful to the diverse range of people leading improvement. Q will continue to evolve, being shaped by the community as it grows. There are now 798 members in the community. Over the coming years, we envisage Q becoming a community of thousands of people.

The community is made of up a diverse range of people including those at the front line of health and social care, patient leaders, managers, commissioners, researchers, policymakers, and others. Including a wide range of perspectives boosts the power of Q as a source of innovation and practical problem-solving.

Q is not a taught programme, but a network of support for those already knowledgeable in undertaking improvement. There is no membership fee or minimum time commitment. Q is designed to support busy people with their current improvement work, ongoing development and promote their visibility as a leader of improvement. Those interested in joining Q will need to demonstrate knowledge and experience of improvement and reflect on how they can benefit and contribute to the community. There is no cap on numbers.

To ensure the community is grown in a manageable way, and to enable members to contribute to its evolving shape and design, opportunities to join Q are being phased across different parts of the UK. The WMAHSN has partnered with Q to help grow the community across the West Midlands. Opportunities for people working or volunteering in the West Midlands will be open from 9 March until 10 April 2017. To find out more about Q, click here, read the FAQs or use the decision tree to find out if joining the Q community is right for you.

Apply via the application portal, and take a look at the user manual or application guidance if you require support. For more information, email JoiningQ@health.org.uk to be kept up to date.

Programme Outcomes

  • This is an exciting time for Q, as a variety of activities and opportunities are piloted which will enable people to connect, exchange, collaborate and learn. Some of these will be led by the Health Foundation, with others led by members and partner organisations.
  • Recently, another 216 members were welcomed to the community, making Q a community of 447 improvers. There are currently 28 Q members in the West Midlands.
  • To ensure the community is grown in a manageable way, and to enable the members to contribute to its evolving shape and design, opportunities to join Q are being phased across different parts of the UK. From 9 March  - 10 April 2017, more people in the West Midlands will be sought as Q members.
