Guidance for pharmacy teams to support care homes to order medication through proxy access

Published on 15 March 2021

A faster and safer way to order medications for care home residents is now available.  Proxy Access supports The Enhanced Health in Care Homes Framework and PCN DES.

NHSX Digital Primary Care team has produced a best practice guide to support Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered care homes and GP practices to allow authorised care home staff to safely and securely order residents’ medication online on their behalf. This is called ‘Proxy access’. Implementation of Proxy access to residents’ GP online services account can save the Care homes, the GP practice and Pharmacy time. Creating a digital audit trail and reduces the risks and issues associated with ordering, issuing, collecting and dispensing repeat medication.

To support implementation, NHS and LGA have published a new step-by-step guide for care homes, GP practices and pharmacies on the NHS England and NHS improvement website. It includes the tools you need and links to further support.

For more information there will be an upcoming Midlands Regional webinar hosted by NHSX on Proxy ordering of medication the 21st April 2021, 3.30 – 4.30pm. This webinar will provide an overview of proxy ordering, the resources available and where to find them, local contacts and an opportunity to ask questions (booking link at the end of this email).
