In 2014, NHS England established an internal Research Needs Panel (RNP) to evaluate gaps in evidence that NHS England teams identified with the aim to support and promote the use of evidence-based decision-making in the NHS. The RNP aims to encourage an integrated and inter-disciplinary approach to support the Five Year Forward View priorities.
The RNP has expanded to include Public Health England (PHE), Health Education England (HEE) and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). The focus of the RNP has grown to reflect the breadth of NHS England regional and national interests; with submissions ranging from applied healthcare research to policy changes.
The RNP sits six times per year to review these needs. Submissions are reviewed by the panel and where appropriate are forwarded to the Department of Health R&D Committee or to the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)
NHS England now invites organisations, teams or unit to submit a policy or applied healthcare research need to the next Research Needs Panel, which convenes on 16 March. NHS England has produced one generic template so you can submit one or more research needs without having to make a decision on whether your priority relates to policy or applied health care research. Joint applications between directorates, organisations and those from CCGs are strongly encouraged.
Completed templates need to be returned to the Research and Innovation team, no later than 9 March to firstname.lastname@example.org to be considered for the March meeting.
If you would like to discuss your submission with a member of the research and innovation unit prior to submission, please contact email@example.com.
Guidance on submission will be published shortly and will be available via the NHS England website.
